Jio tops TRAI’s 4G mobile data speed test, now 11 times in a row
Reliance Jio surpassed other telecom operators to become the fastest 4G network in India, in the month of November, as per Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) MySpeed application. Now 11 times in a row, even as rivals showed no visible sign of catching up. Reliance Jio recorded an all-time high download speed of 25.6 megabit per second during the period which interestingly is also its highest so far in the 2017 calendar year seemingly suggesting that the network is getting better with time.
Jio, to recall, recorded data speed of 17.4 Mbps, 16.5 Mbps, 18.5 Mbps, 19.1 Mbps, 18.8 Mbps, 18.7 Mbps, 18.4 Mbps, 18.4 Mbps, 21.9 Mbps and 21.8 Mbps during January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September and October, respectively. In November, however, it reached its peak download speed of 25.6 Mbps, according to TRAI data, which is based on “average of the data speed samples collected from various consumers of the TSPs on a crowd sourcing basis during speed test initiated by them over the last 3 months and the monthly trends are updated on the 1st of every month.”
Jio was followed by Bharti Airtel which recorded a speed of 9.8 Mbps, which although represents its best performance since September, still trails substantially when compared with Jio statistics for the same period. Bharti Airtel was closely followed by Vodafone, while Idea Cellular clocked a disappointing data speed of 7 Mbps in November, its lowest so far in 2017.
Although the Jio speed is encouraging in terms of TRAI data, for many consumers the user experience could be different. This is because it takes into account an average -- which is mathematical and often computational -- and not actual user-case scenarios and/or experiences. It must be clearly understood that 4G speed is no indication of the reliability and stability of a network: a fast network does not necessarily mean the most stable network and vice versa. The TRAI data, however, does give you a brief indication/confirmation that telecom companies are slowly mending their ways and Jio has a lot to do with it. Having said that, there’s still a long way to go.
