Reliance JioPhone to be Made in India soon

Highlights

  • Reliance Jio reportedly manufacturing Jio Phone in India
  • The 4G-enabled feature phone managed to cross 6 million pre-orders in first round
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio may soon start manufacturing JioPhone in India. We have come across multiple reports that suggest the company may have begun JioPhone manufacturing in Chennai.
Interestingly, Reliance JioPhone reached 6 million pre-orders in the first round with over 10 million interested buyers, according to the company. During the JioPhone annoucement, RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani said the company aims to ship 5 million Jio phones per week.
With such a massive demand and the long over-due second round of pre-order, Jio may have begun planning how to handle additional 10 million applications. Notably, the first batch of JioPhone was imported from China.
To recall, the JioPhone officially arrived in India late July 2017. The feature phone runs on KaiOS, which is based on the Firefox OS. It supports existing Jio apps and services like MyJio, JioMusic, JioTV, JioCinema and more.
However, it does not support social media apps like WhatsApp and Facebook. The support for the same is due but not there yet.
The 4G VoLTE-enabled feature phone comes at an effective price of Rs 0. Interested buyers have to pay a one-time refundable security deposit of Rs 1500. The amount is refundable after three years once users return the handset.
If the report is to be believed, Reliance Jio resumed the JioPhone booking process last month and sent out messages to potential customers who expressed their interest in buying the feature phone. Reliance chairman, Mukesh Ambani, had said during the launch that JioPhone will be made in India without disclosing any details with regards to its timeline.
So we spoke to someone higher up at Jio to confirm the reports. Though the person did not confirm or deny the reports, on conditions of anonymity, the person told us that it had to happen sometime soon anyway.
So, if we read between the lines, one can expect the ‘Made in India’ JioPhone to make its appearance soon.
